Fun Class: R for Rainbow

This is the second lesson for letter R, in the first lesson, she learned R for Rabbit.

She sang the greeting song to start the lesson.

After a quick revision on the words and pictures that she learned in her first lesson on R, we listened to the rhyme and song of R, which went like this:
Running, Rowling, Rr, Rr, Rr.....
Rr is the sound of R!

She traced the upper and lower case R. This worksheet was printed from Starfall.com. A very good website for the kids to learn letters and phonics.

I prompted her to spell the word "Rainbow".  If you're interested to find out this technique, you may refer to here.

The craft work for this lesson was to draw a rainbow on a plastic wrapped paper, it started well initially......

The final product, eh, I think one will need some imagination to see her Picasso drawing....

We sang the closing song of "The Rainbow" to end the lesson.

Fun Class: R for Rabbit

We started the lesson after singing the greeting song.

She traced letter R in upper and lower case.

You can print your own A-Z A4 size paper easily, just make sure the alphabet is big enough.

We listened to the phonics sound and song of letter R, which went like this:
Running, Rowling, Rr, Rr, Rr.....
Rr is the sound of R!

She took out the pictures of objects spelled after letter R from an envelop, she would say out the name of the objects before pasting them on the A4 paper.

She labeled the pictures after spelled the words.

Her letter R pictures with labels. Look at her happy face, the glasses is a toy glasses by the way....

I prompted her to spell the word rabbit, she has no problem on prompting now, my next task will be helping her on blending the alphabets.....

Since we had more time, I let her coloured the phonics sheet. I asked her what colour does she like, she said pink. So we mixed the red and white to get the pink colour.

She was amazed that pink is mixed by red and white colour, everything seem to be exciting for her age.

She likes painting a lot, if I were to let her choose between paint or crayon, she will choose paint for sure.

The material for the craft work in this lesson:

She pasted the cotton wool on the picture of a rabbit. She just likes to do funny faces.....

We sang the closing song of Little Peter Rabbit to end the lesson.

Catching the 'LongKang‘ fish at Mainland Tropical Fish Farm!

Well, when my brother told me about this place, I was very looking forward to bring my kids there.
I still remember the good old days when I was catching the small fish in a small river with my playmates. It is a wonderful memory to me and I want my kids to have the fun too, although not in the same way......
So last Saturday, we made a trip to Mainland Tropical Fish Farm.
This fish farm is located at Pasir Ris Farmway, if you're going by highway, take the TPE, exit 5 (same exit for IKEA Tampines), while you are on the road of Pasir Ris Dr 12, look for the sign board of "Aqua Fauna Centre" as it is just beside this Aqua Fauna Centre.
Parking can be inside the fish farm or along the road outside the farm.

There is this big pond for the Koi fish.

Fish, fish! My boy pointing to the Koi fish excitedly.

Fish food can be purchased at $4 per pack if you would like to feed the fish.

There is this shop front that sells all the accessories necessary to complete your fish tank.
For "LongKang" fishing, you will need to pay the $4 here and get the bucket and net.

There is also an area for prawn fishing, but we did not explore that.

Here comes our most exciting activity of the day! One, two, three, four, five, once I caught a fish alive..... singing this nursery rhyme relaxingly, was thinking that it should be an easy task......
Chloe had been looking forward to this activity ever since I told her about my planning to visit the fish farm, but to catch the fish is really not as easy as we thought.....

The area for this "LongKang" fish catching activity is pretty small, but there are plants and stones around that make the place looked natural. The picture above shows the dragonfly eggs, there are also water snails in the drains and some butterfly flying around, so it is a good place for our kids to experience the natures.

After half an hour, this were what the 3 kids (and 4 adults) got.......

The kids happily checking on what they've caught.

The aunties there were kind enough to add in few more fish while packing for the kids.

The kids were happy to bring back their fish.

This was the first time Chloe get so closed to the fish, she even asked me " the baby fish got mummy?" haha!

Some information on the fish farm:
Address: No.1 Pasir Ris Farmway 1,Singapore 519352
Telephone: (65) 62873883, 65843643, 65812550
Fax (65) 62884200.
Email: enquiries@mainlandfishfarm.com
Website: http://www.mainlandfishfarm.com
Fee for "LongKang" fishing: $4 per half an hour

Singlish for the day:
"LongKang" = drain
Why is it called "LongKang" or drain fishing? Back to the old days, our wastage was disposed to the river through the drains connected to the river. Because the drains were connected to the river, there were small fish swimming from the river to the drain, and it was where the kids like to gather and catch their guppy fish.

English for the day:
"Fish" can imply singular or plural, e.g.  one fish, five fish.
"Fishes" can imply many individual fish(es) of differing species

一,二,三.......

While Chloe was doing her exercises book....
Mummy: Count the bowl and write down the correct number
Chloe: 1, 2, 3, 4, Four!
Mummy: Good, can you write '4'? (Don't think she can.....)
Chloe: Yes, I want to write the Chinese four
Mummy (impressed): oh, you can write the Chinese four? That's quite difficult.
Chloe: Yes, 一,二,三.......
This is what she had written:

My home, my playground

My elder girl and younger boy are 20 months apart, sibling rivalry has been getting more and more intense ever since my boy turn 1 year old. Previously, my way of dealing with this was to separate the two, buy two sets of toys for them, and avoid conflicts between them, but it had made the situation worse.
After some observation, I found that the best way to improve their relationship is to let them play more, fight more, and learn through the conflicts. I shall blog about this phase in another article, but right now I would like to share how to create a fun environment at home where they can play together in harmony.

Carton box house:
All kids like to squeeze into this small box, which they call it their "house", including my 6 year old niece, who visited us over the weekends.
They hide inside the "house", close the door, open the door repeatedly, playing "Big bad wolf" and feeling excitedly.

This is another version of the toy house, made by chairs, mattress and blanket:
Looked scary? Haha! This is exactly what they like, whenever someone shouting "big bad wolf is coming!" They would scream and run into the "house".

They are not only playing in the "house", but sleep and drink their "milk milk" there too :)

Another all time favourite of theirs, "slide" made by pillows and mattress:

With a mattress and a few pillows, you can turn your house into an indoor playground, at no additional cost! The best toy is not always the most expensive toy, there is really not necessary to buy more toys for our kids thinking that they would enjoy playing them.
They still quarrel and fight over toys very often, but not as bad as before, and now, I do see my girl caring for her brother, sharing her toys with him and my boy saying "sorry" after stepping his sister unintentionally.
Most importantly, my husband joins in the fun to played as the "big bad wolf", instead of complaining about his two little demons, I guess, he has better rest after back home from his work now :)

Fun Class: Q for Quilt

This is the second lesson for letter Q, in the first lesson, she learned Q for Queen.

She sang the greeting song to start the lesson.

After a quick revision on the words and pictures she learned in her first lesson on Q, we listened to the rhyme and song of Q, which went like this:
Quails 'a quarreling q, q, q,
Q is the sound of Q!

She traced and write upper and lower case Q on the worksheets I printed from Starfall.com

I prompted her to spell the word "Quilt".
The craft work for this lesson was to make a quilt by using the cloths and paper below:

I wanted to staple the cloths to the paper which I thought would be easier, but it was not working and I let her paste the cloths  on the paper by using glue instead.
The finished product looked like this, is ugly isn't it?

I told her the story of "ducks in a farm", where she played as the duckling:
The storyline was something like this:
A farmer had a farm where the ducks were very noisy, a queen gave a magic quilt to the farmer where the ducks would keep quiet once they see the magic quilt. You can tell any story as long as you have fun with your kid.

We had fun playing with the duck headband from her lesson D, she made the sound "quack, quack, quack" whenever I put the quilt down, and kept quiet when I put the quilt up.

Didi joined in the fun as the "Queen", haha!

We dance around with the closing song of Six little ducks.
