Learning can be easy!.......Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger133125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3147624186256032181.post-72406223438599645952015-11-27T17:21:00.002+08:002015-11-27T17:21:59.732+08:00P1 Registration, Her Journey to Rosyth! Step by step guide on P1 RegistrationMany parents complain about the primary school registration in Singapore being a stressful process, but I beg to differ, probably I'm someone who plans ahead, and I don't give myself unnecessary stress for engaging in "mission impossible".

Here, I would like to walk you through the school selection and registration, I hope it will be helpful to you.

Step 1: Check the schools distance
Regardless of which stage of parenthood you are, be it "Kiasu" parent whose kid is not even born, or "super slack" parent who panick last minute, ask yourself this question:
"What are the schools around my house?"
Check the link here:
http://www.elite.com.sg/

P.s. you might want to check it before purchasing a property (yah, Kiasuism again, but it saves you from crying later).
Warning: Please do not buy a house next to elite school if you are not interested in joining the game, some parents didn't realise how popular the school next to their property, and this is the group of parents who will cry "I just want a school near to my place!!".

Basically, I do not encourage parents to register in a school further than 1 km from your place, unless you have a chauffeur (or you want to be one lol).

Step 2: Check the registration / balloting history
You can check the history here:
http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/content/singapore-primary-1-registration-school-balloting-history?page=3
But you need to be a member to view the content.
The balloting history will give you an insight on how popular the schools around your place, which is helpful in your decision making.

Step 3: Decide on the available options
It depends on which stage are you in, do you have sufficient time to grasp the school of your choice?
Here, let me do up a decision tree for you:

A) School does not require balloting
Ok, you may continue to slack, but don't forget to check the MOM website during the registration period to avoid unexpected outcome.

B) School requires balloting
- Is your kid below 4 years old?
You still have the option to volunteer yourself for your kid to be qualified in 2B phase. If you're very firmed on the school of your choice, you may apply to be a Parent Volunteer (most school open the registration for PV 2 years before P1 registration); if you're undecided, Grassroots will be a better choice (GV's entitlement to 2B phase is for the schools in your constituency, thus you can still decide on which school to enrol your kid upon registration of P1) .

For my case, all three schools in my neighbourhood require balloting, i.e. Hougang Primary, Xinmin Primary, and Rosyth Primary. Rosyth is one of the top school in Singapore, while both Hougang and Xinmin are very popular neighbourhood school in our area, I could not decide which school shall I enrol her, and serving the residents seem to be in-line with my passion, thus I've chosen to be a GV rather than PV. Do note that new requirement starting 2015 requires GV to serve for 2 years before 2B phase certificate can be issued.

I've seen too many parents who are "bo chap" when their kids were in nursery, but changed their mind after seeing the classmates of their kids enroll into popular school. These are the parents caught unprepared, yet do not want to "lose out".

- Is your kid above 4 years old?
If you still want to try your luck and missed the boat of volunteering your service, you can only rely on the strategies which I will reveal to you next........ pay attention!

Step 4: P1 registration strategies, be prepared!
If you belong to the A group, just make sure you check the MOM registration phase before its closing date.

If you belong to the B group, do plan ahead and be decisive:
1) Enrol on the last day of registration, not the first day
2) Check the registration status on the last day of registration, 2 hours before closing time
3) Make your decision decisively, shall I join the ballot? Shall I pull out (from first choice) to another school?

Here I give you a few real life cases:

1) Last year, 2 grassroots volunteers of my constituency registered in Rosyth, on the last day of registration, 1 grassroots volunteer found out that balloting is required even for citizen staying within 1 km of the school, he decided to withdraw his kid and put him in Hougang, which only required balloting in 2C phase. This volunteer secured a slot for his kid in Hougang in 2B. The other grassroot volunteer, decided to try her (or her kid's) luck, which the kid didn't get a place in Rosyth from the balloting, she disappointedly register her kid in Hougang again in 2C phase, which a balloting is required. She and her kid went through 2 rounds of heart trembling balloting.

2) A friend of mine, initially deciding between 2 schools, School A and School B. School A was very popular neighbourhood school but required balloting in phase 2C for non citizen while School B did not require balloting. She was hesitating to make a decision between the 2 choices. School A and School B are both good school in her area, but she decided to try her luck at School A. There were around 18 PR turned up for the balloting for 2 vacancies, she was not one of the lucky two. Her child then need to go through phase 2C Supplementary to get a place in P1. For this phase, as most Singaporean who fail to get a place in phase 2C would then register for their next best option, which would be school like School B, Singaporean will have advantage over the non citizen, which means my friend will need to ballot again if she were to register her kid at School B. She then decided to register her kid at School C instead. Using this example, if she were decisive at phase 2C, her kid would be able to register in School B without balloting.

I hope the above write up is useful to you, no matter which school is your kid attending, remember the MOE slogan, every school is a good school! :)

I wanted to do a craft that's cute and pretty, thus I had chosen this one for my letter R lesson.

The craft is adapted from a Chinese website (refer to the link on the picture), the picture below is pretty clear on how you should go about doing it. Basically you only need to cut 2 pieces of white paper into the shape of its legs and head, roll it and paste it together.

See their happy faces with their rabbits. By the way I do see difference in boy and girl in their works, the boy's rabbit looked more like a dirty cat, ha!

Do a pig nose like the one in the picture above, tie it with rubber bands so that the kid can wear it on the ears.

The story of "Three Little Piggy" can be found here.

I'm sure your kids will enjoy this lesson with the role play. Do enforce letter P at the start and the end of the lesson.

Basically, you just need a string and some macaroni.
I came across this very cute Mickey Mouse made from toilet roll, which is easy to do, and easy to associate with my letter M lesson.

I signed up the tour as I thought such tour will educate my kids on the different religions and cultures of the different ethnic. The tour turned out not only educational, but also an eyes opener to us.

1) Burmese Buddhist Temple
This is the first temple visited by us. I was quite surprised to know that there's such a historic temple in Singapore. This temple has very beautiful exterior, full of nicely carved details made by woods and painted in gold and white colour.

A closer look at the statue displayed at the entrance:

Many Buddhist visit the temple on Sunday morning.

This is the Buddha made by marble in Myammar and transported to Singapore in 1921. I came to know this after reading the mural on its wall on level 2, which I'll write about it later.

There are murals telling the story of Buddha on the wall, which are quite educational to the visitors.

These wood carve are found on the doors and pillars. Very good workmanship.

This mural tells how the Buddha figure, made by marble that weight 10 tons, transported to Singapore in the early 19 century. As shown in the mural, the Buddha figure was first sculptured from a marble at Sagyin Hill in 1918, and was transported through boat, elephant, ferry and finally reached a premise in Singapore. The staff told us that each pagoda in a temple is used to keep something special and important to the temple, it can be the remains of a Buddha, or any objects left by the Buddha.
Although we are not Buddhist, I like this Buddhist temple the most, reason being it has a story to tell, and the beauty of its architecture. If you're interested to visit the temple, you may check out its website here:
2) Arulmigu Velmurugan GnanaMuneeswarar (AVGMT) Hindu Temple in Sengkang
I have a hard time typing this name, a very long name indeed! This is the first time we visited a Hindu Temple. It is very interesting to see the Indian having their prayer and spiritual ceremony, which we would definitely not have the chance without the help of the organiser.

We were told that AVGMT is the only temple in Singapore to have two main deities, not too sure why other temples do not have more than one main deity but I think this is certainly something special.

3) Loyang Tua Pek Kong Temple
This temple is special that there are not only the Chinese gods in this temple, but also Natok Kong (Malay) and Ganesha (Hindu deity) just beside the temple.
The temple started with an interesting story, it was said that in the 1980s, someone found the statues washed to the beach and build a small shrine for the statues. When time goes by, the shrine gets its popularity but unfortunately a fire had burned down everything in the shrine except for the Tua Pek Kong statue. The devotees has since then build other temples for the Tua Pek Kong and finally settled down in the current location.

Another interesting fact of this temple is that the original Tua Pek Kong is coated with gold after the fire incident and is now hidden in the body of the Tua Pek Kong figure below. The temple will only open and show the public the golden Tua Pek Kong probably 30 years later.
I hope Chloe has gain something from the trips to these 3 temples. She did enjoy the visits despite not feeling well. I asked her if she would want to visit the temples again and she told me yes, I think it is a good experience to her.
Make your own 3D art!3D or foam art is quite popular among the kids now, parents buy it because it is relatively cheap (around $1.50 to $3.50 per piece) and easy to do. But instead of buying, I decided to make my own.

It is very easy and cost saving to make your own 3D art / card, you may use a photo paper as an alternative to the foam.

G for Giraffe

What you'll need:
1) 2 pieces of photo papers
2) A colour printer
3) Double sided tape
4) cardboard (you may cut it from used carton box)
4) A pair of scissors

Instruction:
1) Search for a colourful picture from the Internet, print it out on the photo papers.
For me I selected the following picture:

2) You will need to print two copies of the picture, one as the base and the other one for the upper layer.
As we only need a few objects for the upper layer, I took away the background colour of the picture to save my cartridges.

3) Cut out the objects that you would like to paste on the upper layer.
4) Paste a layer of cardboard below the cut-outs, to create the 3D effect when it is pasted on the picture.
The materials done:

5) Let the kid paste the cut-outs to the picture. They could do it like solving a puzzle, give the kid some hints on those small objects.

I got mine from NTUC.

F for Flowers Wreath

What you'll need:
1) One egg carton
2) Water colour paints
3) One white card (the size will depend on how big is the flower wreath)

Instruction:
1) To start with, you need to cut the egg carton into something like this:

2) You may trim the edge of the cut out to be like this:

3) Or you may leave it like this for some variance to the pattern of the flowers.

4) For those small cut out, you may use it as leaf.

5) After which, colour the cut outs with water colours. Try to use a few combination of colours.

6) Leave the coloured 'flowers' aside to dry, it would probably take half a day.
7) Cut the white card into a circle, I use the diameter of about 12 inches.
8) Paste the 'flowers' on the side of the white card.
9) You may decorate it with some writing.

For my Fun Classes A to Z lesson plan and crafts idea, do check out here.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3147624186256032181.post-33520568964825035642013-06-24T17:59:00.000+08:002013-06-24T17:59:29.219+08:00Resources: Teaching Your Kids PianoMy girl is currently playing and learning piano by herself without attending formal lesson. I do not send her for piano lesson as I think formal lessons might kill her interest, while fun and interesting lessons might not yield the results in short term thus require more capital in the investment (no, it is not a waste of money just that you'll need to spend more).

Will I send her to proper lessons in future? My answer would be "Yes" if she really has the interest but "No" if she doesn't.

This post includes the resources I printed for her from the Internet, you may refer to it if they are useful to you:

1) Printable manuscript:
http://www.zpu.cc/pr/
You may print the manuscript according to your setting, example resize the staff (i.e. the lines), add in treble or bass clef, add in bar and etc.
For those who just want to print the manuscript in blank, treble clef or bass clef without the trouble of doing the setting, you may refer here:
http://makingmusicfun.net/htm/printit_manuscript.htm
This is useful for the kid to practice writing the notes and symbols.

2) Free download of music scores with an application for PC or Apple users:
http://www.77music.com
This is a Chinese website, sorry for those who cannot read Chinese.
There are many free music scores can be downloaded here. What I like the most is the free application which you can open any music scores and the app will show you how is it played on piano. Excellent website.

3) Free piano sheet from easy to difficult levels:
http://makingmusicfun.net/htm/printit_piano_sheet_music_index.htm
Another excellent website, I can't believe all these are free for download, many easy to play music scores for the kids which they are familiar with.

4) Theory games for the kid that I find useful and interesting:
http://makingmusicfun.net/htm/printit_manuscript.htm
Other theory worksheets or games:
http://makingmusicfun.net/htm/printit_notename.htm

I'll update this post as and when I found new website with useful resources.
I personally enjoyed it very much, and here I'm going to tell you why :)

First of all, the place is called 'Bottle Tree' because of the below tree imported from Australia. You can see this tree in the park, I did not take a picture of the tree as it is slightly further away from the fish pond.

I have been to the Chinese restaurant before, the food is ok and at reasonable price.

Other than this Chinese restaurant, there are also a bar and a Japanese restaurant there. The snacks selling at the bar are slightly expensive but it is very convenient as you can order the food to the fishing pond and enjoy the food while watching over your kids.

This is where the Longkang fishing area. I like the design of it as kids get to step on the stones and walking in the pond, it really looked like the fishing pond we had during our childhood.

For $10, you get a net (to be returned to the counter after fishing) and a fish tank (you can bring home). You can catch unlimited fish at unlimited time! It is so much fun when you could catch the fish without keeping to the time given. I remember Mainland was charging us $4 for half an hour or so and we were chasing the fish like mad in the short time given!
I caught a few fish by using my bare hands! This reminds me of how I caught the Longkang fish when I was a kid. Haha, I think I had more fun than my kids!

This is how much fish we had caught! The staff there just didn't care how many fish we had caught and how other people were catching their fish (I saw some catching using a big handkerchief!), and the staff kept putting in more fish for the kids to catch.
The park is just beside the MRT track nearer to Yishun MRT. It is about 15 mins walk from Yishun MRT to the side gate opposite the Yishun Stadium. If you're driving there, the entrance is from Lorong Chencharu, which is at the other side and not this MRT track. Do take a look of the map to find this Lorong Chencharu first.

I'm not sure how many of you have done it, but I still remember vividly how this activity formed part of my childhood. When I was in primary school, there was this little boy sitting beside me. Whenever we had breaks in between of the lessons, he would invite me to draw a picture with him. The title can be anything set by him, a garden, a space tour in the universe, a picnic or anything that he could think of. We would take turn to draw an object on the paper, and form a story when we were drawing. It was a very fun process, and I picked up some drawing skill from him.

Last Saturday, I thought of this activity and told Chloe my idea of doing a joint drawing with her, with a story in mind. She happily accepted the challenge.

We started the story by saying it was a fine and sunny day. She drew the sun (which looked like rambutan to me, haha! ).

When it was my turn, I drew a house which I though might be too difficult for her to draw. She said that was our house, and she drew herself standing beside the house. I then drew a tree beside her drawing.

We enjoyed ourselves drawing the picture together. It was fun hearing her talking from her point of view. For example she drew her brother without hair, but herself with long hair, she said her brother is a baby the hair is not grown out yet.

She requested to colour the picture. I let her choose the colours but I would give her some suggestions. I also did some enhancement over her colouring to show her how to make the drawing looked better.

She enjoyed this activity as much as I did. At night, she placed the drawing beside her bed when she was sleeping.
I hope this post does give you idea on what to do with your kid when you have the extra time. It is a very easy activity and can be completed within 30 minutes. Through the activity, you'll be able to enhance your bonding with your kid, and understand your kid better.

So, happy drawing with your kid! :)
This set of books claim to enable the kids to start reading Chinese at the age of 4 or even younger, and many parents bought the set hoping to achieve this, however many of them do not know how to start using the books.

A brief introduction of the book (in case you don't know yet :P)
There are 7 books in a set. Kids learn simple and basic characters like 大(big), 小(small), 人(human), 头(head), 哭(cry), 笑(smile) in the first lesson. These words are easy to explain to the younger kids, and they form the basic of many sentences used in our daily life.
The books advance from basic words to simple nouns, terms and sentences. Example, kids learn to form short sentence in book one using the basic words they have learned:
小鸟在天上飞,小羊在地上跑。
In the above sentence, 鸟 and 羊 are easy to be remembered by the kids as kids tend to like animals, 小 and 地上 are introduced at the first two lessons, while 跑 is been used by the parents almost daily (don't you like to say 不要跑!haha!). So the word 在 might probably be new to the kid but this is one of the words that need not be explained and can be understood when you see them more often, example of other words are 的,和,是.

Kids get confidence when they are able to read the sentence, and they progress to read short stories in the books. One big success of the book is that it introduces words progressively and base on the frequency the words are commonly used.

So now that you have bought the books, how are you going to start?!

If you are teaching a primary school kid, you can probably let the kid read through the books lesson by lesson. But if you are teaching a pre-school kid, you might need to spend some time to make the lessons fun!

Let's look at what's on the first lesson:
There are 16 words been introduced in the first lesson in Book 1. On page 2, 6 nouns / adjectives been formed by using the words learned in page 1. On page 3, kid is to guess what the pictures are and their matching words. There are some explanation on how to explain the words in page 4.

My girl had learned the words in the Chinese Fun Classes where I was using the Er San Kuai Du (二三快读) which is more suitable for kids below 3 years old. So first lesson was not a problem to her. But she started to get bored when we were at lesson 3, where more words are new to her.

In order to get her interested in learning the words, I photocopied page 2 and 3 of each lesson and let her cut the words and pictures out and join them together. Kids at the age of 3 to 4 start to explore things around them including scissor, marker pen, eraser and even broom and mop. Many things which are common to us might be something interesting to them, and this is the time they improve on their motor skill.

My girl likes cutting paper very much, she is able to handle scissor very well now. If your kid is still unable to use scissor, you might consider cut the paper by yourself and let the kid do the pasting.

I let her paste the pictures on one side of the A4 paper:

She would find the matching words and paste it on the side of the picture.

There are some word cards at the end of the books which you can cut them out to enhance your teaching. You may let the kid form sentences using those cards after the kid finished the first few lessons.

Once again I stress that the teaching and learning using this set of books should be fun and stress-free. Kids will only learn when they are interested in it, or else you are just wasting your time and money.

Some points on using the books:
1) Do not make your kid memorise the words, instead, you should explain each word to your kid in an interactive way. Refer here on how I make the lesson fun.
2) Relate the words to something the kid gets to see often as and when possible. E.g. 月 which resemblances the crescent moon, while 人 resemblances a human in a walking posture.
3) Do not use the word cards like the flash cards i.e. not to flash the cards to the kids to make them remember the words. Research has shown that hard memory is just temporary and will not last long.
4) You might add in some activities to enhance the learning experience, example like what I've mentioned above, let the kid cut and paste the picture and words, or it can be drawing or colouring the words.
5) Lastly, please refer here on guidelines on teaching young kids Chinese language.
