Fun Class: S for Star

We started the lesson after singing Greeting Song.

After a quick revision on the words and pictures that she learned in her first lesson on S, we listened to the rhyme and song of S, which went like this:
Snakes are slimy, S, S, S.....
Ss is the sound of S!

She traced the upper and lower case S on the worksheets I printed from Starfall.com.

She is getting better on holding and controlling the pen.

I prompted her to spell star. For technique on prompting, click here.

These were the materials for our craft.

She pasted the cotton wool on the black paper as cloud, followed by stars and moon.

Her completed craft work on her shinning stars!

We sang the closing song of Twinkle twinkle little star. She dashed out the room immediately after I finished singing the song. She seem not so interested on the closing song nowadays.

We are now towards the end of our A-Z fun classes, I'm currently planning on her Chinese fun lesson, shall update on this soon.

Interesting sticker activity books for toddlers

My girl (currently 3 years old) likes to do this type of activities books. She especially likes the stickers given in the book where she can paste them according to the instructions of the book. She can do it at least 4 pages everyday before sleep and I have to stop her from doing it most of the time. So I find this a good way to fill up her time and prevent her from watching too much TV.

She learns simple words, numbers, mathematics and reasoning from these books. Right now she can do simple mathematics (summation and subtract) and I find her improving everyday.

If you are thinking of buying these types of activities books, do take note of a few points:
1) Try to buy those colourful books, as my girl doesn't interested on those black and white copies.
2) The stickers in the book have to be meaningful and related to the activities in the book, or else you'll just ended having your wardrobe decorated with all these stickers.
3) Young kids can't really write yet, thus don't buy those books which requires lots of writing, you might kill their interest instead by doing so.
4) Buy those with interesting pictures, the books must be able to keep the children's interest.
5) All kids like to scribble, it is ok if your kids scribble on the books instead of writing words, they'll learn to follow instruction slowly.

The books I bought for my girl are normally very cheap, but with acceptable quality. She still needs my guidance when doing the exercises, but she's improving. I do not force her to do the book, she's the one requesting to do it most of the time, she sees it as a 'game', something interesting to her.

Hope the above tips do help you in finding an alternative activities for your child, other than watching TV or playing Iphone / Ipad :)

Fun Class: S for Snake

As usual, we started the lesson after singing the Greeting Song.

But this time round, Chloe sang a better version of the Greeting Song, I guess she must have sang this song in her nursery school.

After Greeting Song, she traced the upper and lower case of letter S.

I printed the letter on an A4 Size paper. If you're printing this as well, do make sure the letter is big enough for the kid to trace.

We listened to the phonics sound and song of letter S, which went like this:
Snakes are slimy, S, S, S.....
Ss is the sound of S!

She took out the pictures of objects spelled after letter S from an envelop, she would say out the name of the objects before pasting them on the A4 paper. For the pictures, you can download them here.

She labeled the pictures after spelled the words.

Her funny face with the completed Letter S with pictures.

As we still have enough time, she coloured the phonics sheet:

I prompted her to spell the word "snake", she has no problem on prompting now.

One funny incident to share here. She likes to watch youtube on my Iphone, which I disallow her to do so. One day, she took my phone and was trying to search for Mickey Mouse clips, she didn't know how to spell the words yet, and I ignored her. She then told me "prompt me!", haha!

The craft work was making a snake by threading the straws, the materials are as follow:

She was trying hard to do the threading but was unsuccessful initially, I then put a hair clip on the thread so that she could hold the hair clip and insert the straws to the thread easily.

The snake was finally done as follow:

It looks more like a worm to me but she was kind of scared of the "snake". She showed it to her brother and was immediately destroyed by her monstrous baby brother.....

We were too excited to play the "snake" and forgotten to sing the closing song. You may click here for the closing song anyway :)
